The Water Park at Kodimatha, which is very close to the Kottayam town (just 1 Km away), is an ideal place to while away your leisure time. Operated and maintained by DTPC (District Tourism Promotion Council) of the Department of Tourism, Govt of Kerala, the park is open to public on all days. Built by the side of the “Kodoor” river (a river between Kottayam and Alappuzha), the place offers decent ambiance for its visitors to relax and enjoy some safe water sports. Speed boating, pedal boating, rowing, zorbing, banana rides are some of the standard activities at this park.

It was in the 17th and 18th centuries that it grew as a trading centre, thanks to its strategic location and its easy access through the waterways. Transportation at the time was solely through the waterways. The narrow streets of Thazhathangadi were once bustling with the loading and unloading of goods to and from places as far away as Central Asia, Egypt and China. It was with the advent of the road transport network and the decline of the port of Alappuzha as a port that the town lost its glory. The houses constructed during the heydays of the town can be seen as made largely with wood and exhibiting the architectural peculiarities of the time.
